Periodical Cicadas, aka "17 -year locusts, genus Magiccicada;  emerged in Northeast Ohio in the spring of 2016.  Because they are infrequent visitors to the surface, their arrival offered a rare  opportunity for study.  Dr. Stanton's white cicada "tents" were located in strategic areas around the park to collect specimens as they emerged.

The forests and fields of Crowell Hilaka turned out to be home to a healthy population of cicadas.
