We've had lots of folks out to visit Crowell Hilaka!

Paul Ellsworth: Greater Akron Audobon Society

Thank you Paul Ellsworth of the the Greater Akron Audubon Society for joining us at Crowell Hilaka to complete a summer bird census (mid-summer). Rob Richardson, FoCH Board Member, joined Mr. Ellsworth as they hiked the west end of Crowell Hilaka, through Storybook Forest Trail and down Hilltop Road to the Kirby Mill, listening and looking for summer birds and creating a census for the RJRD. Thank you Mr. Ellsworth!

Not only did he hike the entire property, but he also completed a beautiful report with pictures and suggestions on where to start when tackling the invasive species! Thank you Mr. Curtis!

Thank you Kathleen Bradley of the Southern Cuyahoga Birding Group for joining us at Crowell Hilaka to complete a bird census (late summer). She will be working with the Southern Cuyahoga Birding Group to set up a Christmas Bird Count at Crowell Hilaka over the winter.

SPAM filter alert. Our email updates will be changing:  instead of me sending out individual notices to a few people at a time ( which takes quite a while) we will be using a new system.   It’s possible that your provider may tag future FoCH messages as spam.   A couple days ago we sent out a test message about the open house.  If you did not get it, take a look in your spam folder.    To fix ( or avoid ) the spam filter problem,  please
add the address -fochemail@gmail.com  - to your address book.  Or you can go to our site at www.friendsofcrowellhilaka.org  and enter in your email address under Join Mailing List -  you will then be asked to verify your email address.  This will allow all messages to go through.

The RJRD board is working on its application for the Clean Ohio grant.  Certain areas of Crowell Hilaka will be designated for environmental protection where only “passive” recreation will be permitted.  Here’s a map of the proposed area.  Here is an explanation of Passive vs. Active recreation.

The application is due December 5, so it’s a top priority.   For more information contact the RJRD board or attend the next session of  the board meeting Monday, November 24, 6:30 pm at Richfield Village Hall.

Christmas Cookie Sale.   Saturday, December 6,  10 AM to 12 noon.   Richfield Historical Society Museum.

2. Please bring your baked goods by 9am on Saturday morning 12/6.  Please bake at least 3-4 dozen, so that we can be sure that everyone has a great selection to choose from.
3. Please package your cookies for a nice presentation on a disposable plate, or pick up you cookie containers, platters no later than 1PM on Saturday after the sale.

Proceeds support the work of Friends of Crowell Hilaka

FoCH is developing a work proposal to submit to the RJRD.  At our last meeting, we brainstormed ideas for the types of work we would like to do as an organization.  Now we are putting it together. We expect that our goals and mission will evolve along with the RJRD, but we have to start somewhere.  Draft to be discussed at our next meeting,  December 9.

This info on Friends groups in the National Park System has some ideas we may want to use as we re-structure our group.

We will shortly be accepting nominations for the FoCH board of directors for term 2015-2018 .   Details TBA
