CH Memories - Joan Lusk Barnum (" Ember")
Our Mom, Joan Barnum was a Girl Scout leader for over 25 years. Most of her camping experiences took place at her favorite two camps, Crowell and Hilaka. She was both a resident camp director and a day camp director as well as a trainer for the Lake Erie Girl Scout Council. I think the pictures that I sent express the joy that my mom had for being at camp and guiding the campers. She was in her glory! Her enthusiasm was absolutely contagious. Her favorite places in camp were Hi Lea and Kirby House at Crowell and Whispering Woods* at Hilaka. Thank you so much for offering to put a memory post on for our Mom. She truly loved the camps and as her daughters we have the fondest memories of summers and weekends spent at Crowell and Hilaka. - Beth Barnum Foutty
"One Elephant went out to play"...in Kirby House living room! The lead elephant sang a song calling for other elephants. Each person joining the line put their arm through their legs and grabbed the hand of the person behind them until there was a great big long elephant train. The kids absolutely loved it!
"... Joan was actively involved in Girl Scouts for over 25 years where she served as a troop leader for all four daughters, held positions as Day Camp Director, Resident Camp Director, and trainer for Lake Erie Girl Scout Council. Joan loved to camp.... She could build a fire in minutes, navigate a trail in the dark, and put up a tent easily. She was always the first to join in a song and the last to leave a campfire..." - Obituary
* Whispering Woods was a tent unit between the north entrance drive and the dining hall. It was eventually dismantled to make way for the large parking lot across from the hall (now The Lodge)
