Crowell Hilaka Memories- Sherry Petkovsek
July 28, 1963 Dear Mom & Dad, The first day of camp was real swell. We sleep two in a tent and my tentmate is Linda B....We just had our campfire and finished eating our treat called s'more's, which is melted marshmallow on a piece of chocolate between two graham crackers. It's about 9:30 or 10:00 now and I'm writing by flashlight. I can just see the pizza boxes and empty pop bottles on the sink!!....There's a girl from "Widening Circles" in Girl Scouts in our unit from W. Virginia. We'll have 45 minutes of canoe instruction each day. We're thinking about taking a night canoe trip and a canoe trip at Hinkley or another place out of camp. We will go swimming every day and receive swimming instruction like at Red Cross if we want it. Some night if we get permission, we might go "skinny dipping" Guess what it means?! Have fun and don't miss me too much. Love, Sherry
July 28 ( To Glenn) ...In our menus, we get to change, as a unity, one breakfast, lunch, and supper to whatever we want. Thursday supper we plan outselves.....
July 29, We just finished a breakfast of prunes, toast, cereal, and bitter chocolate milk. We going swimming this morning...,,, It's afternoon now and we just finished lunch when it started to pour. It's still raining and if it stops, we'll go canoeing. The swim test we had this morning consisted of doing the front float, back float, breast stroke, & crawl. After that we had to swim for 15 minutes without resting, doing the above strokes, and treading water.
.. I hope it doesn't rain the whole time we're here, but of course it won't rain all the time.
July 31, 1963 ...We had folk dancing today, recreational swimming, and of course, canoeing. We also had crafts today and I madea snake dish, a collie head, and a canoe from clay. Our treat tonight was popcorn and "bug Juice". . .
August 1, 1963. ....The weather's fine here today. Last Tues. we went up the road to see the tanks. Friday we're going to have an all-night Brownie Bake which means 3 or 4 girls make brownies while the rest sleep. After a while others take their place. Monday we're going on a mock canoe trip. We'll take our own dishes and sleeping equipment and canoe over to the island in our lake and sleep in jungle hammocks. Thursday we're hiking to Hinckley and go swimming and canoeing there. Friday night our unit is putting on a synchronized canoe show for Upper Lake (Linnea) That'll be our last night and then I'll be home again. .
...I'm having a lot of fun out here and by the way, our councilor's names are Sink, Moose, and Mac.
August 3, 1963 Last night was our all night Brownie Bake. Our group (4) made brownies between 2- 4. They turned out pretty good except it was slightly gooey in the middle. We got to sleep later (8:15 instead of 7) The counselors made us pancakes and sausages at North House. It was raining when we woke up. Yesterday (Friday) we went on a creek hike. We walked in the creek and observed different forms of nature. Enclosed are some samples of the jewel weed. If you swish a little in some water, they'll look silver. The large leaf is a sassafrass leaf. Last night we saw a raccoon at our garbage pail. I finished a Nancy Frew book yesterday also. At north House I sawa Plain Dealer and found out corn at Pick'N'Pay is or was 29 cents a dozen....
Tonight the CIT ( Counselors in Training)unvited our unit to a hootenanny ( song festival) . It should be fun.
August 4, 1963We had Scout's Own today which is like a church service. Some of us went canoeing tonight and it was wonferful since there wasa full moon out. We had a wide game today in which each unit had to have somethign for hte other units to do. Our unit laif a rowboat course. I did 3/4 mile today for the 50 miler which means I have done 1 1/4 miles at camp so far.
August 7m 1963. The time sure seemed to fly by. Claudia, Lyndia & Me slept in jungle hammocks again last night during the rain. Tomorrow is our trip to Hinckly. It should be a lot of fun. We found out our counselors' names.
