CH Memories - snippets

Snippets were gleaned from passing mentions, brief conversations with camp alumni, Facebook postings, or archival scraps.  Too small to warrant a full page,  but too good to lose. Some women shared their names. Others chose not to.

L.D. began camping at Camp Julia Crowell during 1963's Summer Resident Camp . She has a vivid memory of the last night at camp. The closing ceremony was very emotional as all the campers nestled along the shores of the lower lake.  Together, in the twilight, they each held their own lit boat. As the boats twinkled along the shore, the girls sang their closing songs. Then the campers launched their wish boats onto the lake.  As the girls quietly returned to their units, they watched their wish boats sparkle out on the lake.
         Hickory Hill Tent Unit Song.
Hey look us over, lend us an ear / We’re from Hick Hill and we love it here.
We’re (always/never) ------. We’re (always/never)----  /  There’s never a dull moment in our (whole entire day)
Innisfree’s nice, and so’s Orchard Way / But Hick Hill’s the place where our hearts will always be.
………………………….
Hooray for Hickory Hill!!!

When thinking about resident camp 60 years ago, I started to  sing my tent unit song. I recalled two tent units that are no longer. Unfortunately, I cannot remember all the words.  Maybe some other old soul can?

"I went to camp Julia Crowell in the mid 50ties for 2 years. Those are some of my fondest memories:  My Grandma Pahler was one of the cooks during that time. Every time I eat soup I remember “As the ship goes out to sea spoon thy soup away from thee.” Fond memories of the wish boat ceremony lemmi sticks etc."
