HOW A CAMP WAS SAVED

We went through this 2 years ago with Camp Arrowhead in the Columbia River Gorge (surrounded by the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area!).  We didn't wait for the council to decide to let us help before we started bringing in experts.  Since we had a landslide "issue," I didn't handle it myself even though I could have.  Instead, we went for the chair of the local state university geology department who was also a past president of the national Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists and past officer within the Geological Society of America -- and an Eagle Scout.  You get the picture -- someone who could call up the media here in Portland and get a response.

We were starting a media campaign if they hadn't "let" us help -- or at least given us time to get the information and develop a management strategy.  Letters to the editor about the potentially tragic loss for GS in the area . . .  We also were fundraising immediately.  Most of the $90K that we raised went to buy us out of the real estate contract that had been signed, repay the related transaction costs, and keep the insurance up and the lights on until we could prove our point and get $ in the budget.  Several of us active in our service units committed to using the facilities with real $ ($2,000 for a weekend) for our SU campouts with 250-450 participants.

Fortunately, our new council "gets it".  So good luck to you.

Twisted Pine, 20 miles west of Denver

“Girl Scouts of Colorado has decided to rest the day camp and troop camp program at Camp Genesee, 20 miles west of Denver, for the 2009 season.  A wide variety of other Girl Scout day camp and troop camp experiences will be available to girls throughout Colorado.

Girl Scouts of Colorado has also decided to offer troop camping instead of resident camping at Meadow Mountain Ranch, near Estes Park, for the 2009 summer.  The primary reason for offering only troop camping at MMR this summer is that there are significant regulatory problems that need to be resolved before the property can reopen for resident camp.  During the summer, we can safely offer troop camping while we work on the property to meet the new regulatory requirements for resident camping.  In making the difficult decision about camp programs for the summer of 2009, Girls Scouts of Colorado looked at four factors: the cost to open/maintain, safety, the number of girls impacted, and the geographic location of the property.  The number of girls who can attend resident camp in a summer at MMR is lower than at any other resident camp in the state.  The three other resident camps throughout the state will be able to accommodate the girls who attended MMR.  For a similar rustic camping experience, check out the programs available at Sky High Ranch.  For a resident camp located in northern Colorado, check out Magic Sky Ranch.

All Girl Scouts of Colorado properties are being reviewed by a board-appointed property task force, and all property decisions will be made by the Girl Scouts of Colorado Board of Directors.” – from www.girlscoutsofcolorado.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/content.home/PageContentCategoryID/28
