MEMORIES: DAVE AND MILISSA PINZONE WEDDING
Milissa: I have memories of camping at various cabins and tent sites.
I was a camper and then a camp counselor for the residential and core camps in the 1980's where I spent 9 weeks of the summer for about 5 years living in a platform tent and running programs for girls. Kirby House and the Mill are my favorite structures on the grounds. My husband, David, and I were married August 11, 1990, and we got special permission to have our wedding pictures taken at the camp. |
The photo shoot was arranged by "Aunt Nancy" Straughter, Chief Operations Officer for Girl Scouts of Lake Erie Council.
Aunt Nancy (in big hat) is pictured here with the happy couple. No doubt reviewing with them the "SafetyWise" instructions for operating a vehicle at camp.

Milissa's camp name was "Happy". The waterfall was one of her favorite places. She found it by accident, wandering by herself during free time. She would come back again and again, to sit in solitude listening to the water splashing over the rocks and the wind in the trees.
Her memories of camp include floating campfires, "deadman's hands", fairy walks, kitchen raids, midnight suppers.
A "fairy walk" is a stealth operation whereby the older campers would stay awake long past normal bedtime. The counselors would then lead them though the forest, everyone quietly singing White Coral Bells.
White Coral Bells upon a slender stalk,
Lillies of the Valley deck my garden walk.
Oh, don't you wish that you could hear them ring?
That will happen only when the fairies sing.
When they reached a unit where younger campers were sleeping, the "fairy" girls would slip into the tents and leave a little treat under each pillow while trying not to wake anyone up. Then they would quietly sing their way back to their own tents.
Milissa's time at camp contributed to her self-sufficiency and her love of nature. Today, she is is a Licensed Practical Nurse and the mother of three daughters.
