MEMORIES: JOANIE GOTTSCHLING (1965)

This is the best week of the year for me to be in NE Ohio and what better place than Crowell/Hilaka! I can remember NEOTA day weekend (next weekend on the calendar) when school was out on Friday for teacher day and our troop always went camping with a Junior campout with all the troops from the Hillcrest District (where I was in Mayfield) or a Cadette Roundup weekend doing the same.

It was a great 3 days of fun. We would all be in the platform tents, freezing in our sleeping bags, wide games, cooking over the fires (no grills then), doing the kaper chart, learning skills, etc. I'm 64 years old and can remember it like it was yesterday. We also went to Margaret Bates.

How wonderful to have these memories! Friendships everlasting! Skills to carry in to today!!! I
f I came I would make the fire. I would roast PERFECT golden marshmallows for s'mores, bring my guitar and sing all those old camp songs. Take some pictures for me. I'll be thinking of you.

When FoCH was having open houses (November 2014) in hopes to show the public our hidden treasure, I took advantage to go to hidden places dear to my heart to give me strength and hope it could be saved.

I took hundreds of photos of all the usual high points but this is my favorite shot. It represents how the past, scouts, will always have a lasting impact on that land. After finding this shoe, long left or lost, behind the boathouse, I could only think of the girl who was enjoying the lake, swimming or maybe canoeing or sailing, making memories of her own, only to lose this shoe to be found as a reminder to us about the long history of Richfield Heritage Preserve. Enjoy.
