Why list a property on the National Register of Historic Places?
Jim Gabbert of the National Park Service explains in a video . Gabbert makes the following points:
The process of nominating the park as a Historic District was initiated by Kelly Clark as an RJRD member. The Friends did much of the legwork once the project was assigned to them. Rick Sicha and Marcia Moll were the professional historians the RJRD hired to write the lengthy federal nomination. They presented information at RJRD meetings twice. Once was near the beginning of the process to explain the meaning & process of the NRHP designation. The second was before RJRD signed the final document. There were a lot of questions about the state' decision to identify the period of significance as 1937-1969. But in the end, they voted to accept it. In so doing, they identified a direction for the park. Maybe not the only direction, but at the very least, one that would be recognized from then on.

Jim Gabbert of the National Park Service explains in a video . Gabbert makes the following points:
- The Register is federal recognition that a place is important, that it has meaning.
- Such place is a tangible asset, a keystone of place-based learning where children, especially, can experience the story.
- People embrace their history when they know their history. They are proud of places that mean something to the community.
